i am a bag freak!

like i said before, i’m a nut for bags. i’ve wanted a boblbee bag for close 10 years. Ever since they came out in 96? or 97? but they were (and still are) so expensive. They start around $130 for the smaller ones and get to over $200 for the larger ones and the executive models. And then that’s before all the accessories you can get for them! padded waist straps, cargo nets, clip on bags etc, you can easily spend as much as the bag!

Even though I can now afford these bags, i still can’t justify it. But then i find out that ebags.com is selling the “old” version of the megalopolis for just about 50%–well actually it was $90 – an ebags special 20% more. So after shipping i paid $82.10 and it came directly from boblbee.

So what’s the difference from the “old” megalopolis and the new ones? As far as i can tell the only difference is an internal organizer. On some of the other models there’s also a dedicated compartment for a laptop, but functionally they’re still the same.

Now I admit i do have plenty of bags so other then the fact that I’ve always wanted a boblbee why did i buy this? Well I spent an afternoon walking around with my Timbuktu bag (which i’ve owned for 8 years) and the next day my back was killing me, even though it wasn’t that full! Old age i guess.

The boblbees are famous for comfort. And it’s true i spent an afternoon walking around and it is comfortable. Other side-benefits are you rarely see another one of these, most people give you wierd looks because it is pretty funny looking and you can put stickers on them!

Minuses are they don’t hold all that much, about the same as a small backpack. There is only one small pocket in the top flap. The top flap clips over the mouth of the bag, so no zipper to secure it. And inside the bag there are no compartments or pockets so you have to organize things with mesh bags or no organization!

So of these things you can solve, they make bolt-on bags that clip to the outside and fit into the little curve on the back, this gives you somewhere to secure items you need quick access.
I’ll post some follow up thoughts, if you want to see more, just click on the pic to go to my flicker set.

I’ve lived in DC for almost 5 years and only recently started eating at 5 guys. They’ve been in the DC area for about 10 years (?) now but they were in Springfield or Woodbridge so it was a pain to get there. Recently they started aggresive expansion, the first 5 guys burger I ate was actually at the location in Richmond VA where my parents live. They just opened a spot in Merrifield near me and another one in Clarendon so a lot more options.

The burger is like you expect, somewhere between a fast food hamburger and a restaurant hamburger. The taste and freshness are about the same as a restaurant burger (fresh beef not frozen, fresh cut potatoes for the fries), the biggest difference is how ‘neat’ the sandwich is when you get it. At a restaurant you get a nicely presented sandwich, not smooshed up like this one.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes a smooshed up sandwich is what you want, i love the burgers from In-N-Out on the west coast–which to me is the perfect fast food hamburger. That last sentence is not a denigration against In-N-Out, fast food is itself a food class and it does not have to be bad.

The other thing I want to talk about is how we look at food. Removed from the context of a meal and viewed with a measured eye most food is gross. I mean this is an exteme example (i did not feel good after eating this, i’m too old to consume this much food on a regular basis…) but even something more sophisticated can look not so appetizing afterwards. For example i just had a nice bowl of pan-seared shrimp with a butter-lemon-garlic-parsley sauce. It was very tasty, but as I looked at it afterwards things didn’t look as appetizing as when i started!

I didn’t take a picture this time but I’ll make it again this week, i’m adjusting the recipe.

Me with Ben Jones (yes, Cooter)

well with the Duke’s of Hazzard movie out (i have not seen it and it looks stupid), here’s a picture of me with (the real) Cooter and his wife at his store/bbq place near the blue ridge mountains in VA. My MINI is the blue one in the background.

Ben’s a really nice guy, I know people made him sound like a crackpot when he spoke out against the new movie but it is a little unfair that they did not include any of the original cast members.

I mean, what if they make a CHiPS movie and they don’t involve Erik Estrada–he’s the only reason the show is still on cable!
